Wie gehts? I'm happy you found our Iowa Windsurfing Association web site. We do some snow and ice surfing here, but the photo you saw is actually a mixture of a typical winter scene (the fence and drifts are one picture) and the sailor (who was actually sailing on water in the original photograph.) Call it computer magic!

While the photo is not real, we in midwestern United States have experimented with sailing on snow using three skiis.... older boards with short metal fins... and mono-skis. The best idea I've seen yet is developed by a guy in Canada... it's a fiberglass board with a balsa wood core... with steel blades for sailing on ice. This board does it all... he has a video showing jumping as well. Phone (Canada) 416-226-1764

We do more sailing on ice, when we don't have snow. We use home-made versions of Fiberspar's Freeskate ice board.... we build ours with skateboard trucks, steel blades and plywood decks. They work quite well, but I always wear a helmet!

Hope you're having a windy summer,
